Buying and Selling a Home in Baltimore City

Baltimore is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and that is one of the things that makes buying a home here so interesting.

A city of distinct neighborhoods

Baltimore is a city of distinct neighborhoods, and that is one of the things that makes buying a home here so interesting.

Move just a few blocks and the housing, architecture, parking, restaurants, parks, and overall feel can change considerably. I have worked throughout Baltimore City for many years, with a particularly strong focus on the neighborhoods surrounding the Inner Harbor and South Baltimore.

The areas below are not meant to represent every neighborhood in the city. They are simply some of the communities I know well and that buyers and sellers frequently ask me about.

South Baltimore

Federal Hill • Riverside • Otterbein • Locust Point • South Baltimore

South Baltimore is one of the areas where I have spent a significant part of my career helping buyers and sellers.

Federal Hill, Riverside, Otterbein, Locust Point, and the surrounding neighborhoods offer a wide range of city living, from historic rowhomes to fully renovated properties, newer townhomes, and condominiums.

Buyers are often drawn here because of the walkability, restaurants, parks, waterfront access, and proximity to downtown.

But even within South Baltimore, no two blocks are exactly alike. Parking, rooftop decks, outdoor space, renovation quality, historic tax credits, street location, and even which side of the neighborhood a home is on can all affect both value and buyer demand.

That is why understanding the individual neighborhood, and sometimes the individual block, matters when buying or selling in this part of Baltimore.

How Federal Hill, Riverside, Otterbein and Locust Point compare

Waterfront & Southeast Baltimore

Harbor East • Fells Point • Upper Fells Point • Butchers Hill • Patterson Park • Canton • Brewers Hill • Highlandtown

Baltimore's waterfront and southeast neighborhoods offer some of the city's most recognizable residential areas.

Harbor East has a more modern urban feel, while Fells Point combines historic architecture with restaurants, shops, nightlife, and waterfront access. Moving east brings you into Upper Fells Point, Butchers Hill, Patterson Park, Canton, Brewers Hill, and Highlandtown.

These neighborhoods offer everything from traditional Baltimore rowhomes to extensively renovated houses, larger townhomes, condominiums, and newer development.

Many buyers looking in this part of the city end up comparing several neighborhoods before deciding what matters most to them, whether that is walkability, parking, outdoor space, proximity to the waterfront, house size, or overall location.

How Fells Point and Canton compare

North Baltimore

Hampden • Roland Park • Guilford • Homeland • Mount Washington • Tuscany Canterbury • Charles Village • Remington • Medfield

North Baltimore offers a noticeably different residential experience from the neighborhoods surrounding the Inner Harbor.

You will find everything from Baltimore rowhomes and condominiums to detached homes, larger lots, and some of the city's most established residential communities.

Hampden is known for its restaurants, shops, and distinctive personality, while nearby Remington and Medfield offer additional housing options. Farther north, Roland Park, Guilford, Homeland, Mount Washington, and Tuscany Canterbury provide a more traditional residential setting.

For buyers who want to remain in Baltimore City but are looking beyond the waterfront neighborhoods, North Baltimore offers a wide range of choices.

Central Baltimore & Midtown

Mount Vernon • Bolton Hill • Midtown Belvedere • Station North • Charles North • Downtown • Inner Harbor

Central Baltimore combines historic architecture, cultural attractions, city living, and convenient access to downtown.

Mount Vernon and Bolton Hill stand out for their architecture and established residential streets, while Midtown and Station North offer a mix of apartments, condominiums, rowhomes, and other urban housing options.

These areas can appeal to buyers who want to be close to downtown, universities, restaurants, entertainment, and Baltimore's arts and cultural institutions.

Northeast Baltimore

Hamilton • Lauraville • Beverly Hills • Arcadia • Waltherson

Northeast Baltimore offers another side of city living.

Hamilton, Lauraville, and the surrounding communities include a mix of detached homes, front porches, yards, traditional Baltimore architecture, neighborhood businesses, and residential streets.

For buyers who want more space while remaining within Baltimore City, this part of Baltimore can provide options that are very different from the rowhome dominated neighborhoods closer to downtown.

Not Sure Which Baltimore Neighborhood Fits You?

That is often where the conversation starts.

You may know that you want to be in Baltimore City but not know whether Federal Hill, Canton, Hampden, Mount Washington, or another neighborhood makes the most sense.

We can help you compare the housing, location, pricing, parking, amenities, and other factors that can make one neighborhood a better fit than another.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose a Baltimore neighborhood?

It starts with what matters most to you: the style of home, parking, outdoor space, restaurants and parks, closeness to the waterfront or downtown, and price. We help you compare neighborhoods on those points so the choice fits how you actually want to live.

Do values change from one block to the next in Baltimore?

They can. Parking, rooftop decks, outdoor space, renovation quality, historic tax credits, street location, and even which side of a neighborhood a home is on can all affect value and buyer demand. That is why we look at the individual neighborhood, and sometimes the individual block.

Do you work in neighborhoods that are not listed here?

Yes. The neighborhoods on this page are some of the communities I know well and that buyers and sellers ask me about most often. They are not every neighborhood in the city, and I have worked throughout Baltimore City for many years.
